Located in Forest Park, The Missouri Historical Society was established in 1866 to collects, preserves and interprets objects and materials pertinent to an understanding of the history of the city and the state. In 1913, it moved into the newly constructed Jefferson Memorial Building. The Memorial Building stands on the site of the main entrance to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, more commonly known as the 1904 World's Fair. In 2000, the Emerson Center, a significant building addition was completed with a spectacular view of Forest Park through an expansive wall of curved glass from ceiling to floor. The Emerson Center, featuring a ground-to-roof southern glass facade, was designed by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, and included exhibition space, as well as an auditorium, classrooms, and restaurant. The Emerson Center was selected by the American Institute of Architects' Committee on the Environment as an example of architectural design that protects and enhances the environment. It is an example of a green museum.
